PowerWomen232 in meeting its mandate, provides opportunities for networking professional and leadership development, hosts social events and in addition to this has been involved in numerous community service initiatives.
In 2017-2018, our community service component has focused on health and hygiene for teenage/ adolescent girls. PowerWomen232 so far has visited three schools: the Beheshti Islamic Secondary School, the Dr. S.M Broderick Memorial School, and the Mountain Rural Secondary School, giving health and hygiene talks to about five hundred adolescent girls.
The girls have expressed learning a lot from having these open conversations about sensitive and unspoken topics in our cultural settings like menstrual hygiene, which mostly hampers their right to education and affects their social wellbeing. They have also been very appreciative of their Power Hygiene Packs which contain; sanitary pads, deodorant, hand sanitizer, shaving stick, soap, lip balm and other essentials. As a reference guide, a health and hygiene booklet donated by UNICEF is also part of the hygiene pack.
PowerWomen232 plans to take this Girls’ Health and Hygiene outreach project to other schools across Sierra Leone.
